In 2016 Fire Station’s resident ghost Harry has apparently left the building while extensive renovations restore the heritage site to prime condition. The station’s firefighters have been relocated to the nearby City of Sydney station while the 11-month restoration work takes place and, according to Superintendent Peter Stathis from Fire and Rescue NSW, Harry may have gone with them.

“We have had reports of strange goings on (at the City of Sydney station) since the teams made the move so it looks like he might have come with the crew,” said Supt Stathis.

However, the builders have also complained of strange happenings occurring all too often back at Pyrmont.

“Windows they had closed have been opened and things throughout the station have been moved about overnight.” Belinda Hooker, with fellow firey Ryan Oud, has experienced a spooky encounter. Harry’s supernatural activities date back to the 1970s and he has spooked many a an unsuspecting firefighter.

Last year, Pyrmont firefighter Belinda Hooker told Central about her chilling encounter with Harry. “I came back from a fire call in the early hours of the morning and as I was sitting down I felt a strong pressure pushing down on my stomach and upper chest, and vibrations nearby,” she recalled

“Most of us have had similar experiences over the years and there have been incidents like bangs and clangs during the night, helmets rattling on hooks and a shadowy figure wandering around when there was nobody else in sections of the station.”

Was it the ghost of this alleged Harry who was he?

So who was this alleged fire station ghost?

Harry was just a nickname given to the alleged ghost? But the real name of this alleged ghost could be  Fred Bathie?

Over the years many have reported the presence of a ghost in Pyrmont Fire Station. The most common and popular reason behind this is the belief that it is the ghost of Station Officer Fred Bathie. SO Bathie was stationed and lived at Pyrmont Station during the 1920s-30s when the ‘pushers’ terrorised the area.

By all accounts SO Bathie wouldn’t be bullied by the gangs and so made many an enemy of them.
Despite his determined attitude to not bow to the pressures of the gangs, he suffered
considerable anxiety due to the threats they made against him.

Legend suggests that it is thus his ghost that haunts Pyrmont Fire Station however SO Bathie retired from the Brigade on 25 September 1936 and did not die in Pyrmont Station but rather died over three years later elsewhere. While many believe the ghost of Pyrmont Station to be SO Bathie it seems unlikely given he did not die at the station.

Over the years the famous Pyrmont Ghost has come to be known as ‘Harry’, however the possibility of a ghost seems somewhat unlikely with no other reported deaths at the Station since its inception.

That indeed may be true haunts can happen when former employee loved their job so much that even in death their spirit still thinks it is they are still working at the station?

There could be another contender for this alleged ghost haunting the fire station? Wally Plumbe who rose to the rank of Sub-Station Officer before he was tragically killed responding to a fire in 1940. Did his spirit come back after he was killed in fighting a fire believing he was still alive not knowing he is dead?

If so the question remains does his ghost haunt the station today?
