Coupan sighting

THE imfamous local cougar, or €˜coupan€™ was sighted at a Karridale vineyard last Wednesday.
The vineyard manager, who did want to be identified, spotted the big black cat running across the property at high speed.
Shocked, he yelled out to a worker but by the time the worker looked up the cat had gone.
Scouring the area turned up no footprints or other evidence, but the man is convinced it was the Karridale cougar on the property.
€œThere€™s no way it was a feral cat,€ he said.
€œIt was like a big jungle cat.€
The man estimated the cat to be about 70 metres from where he was standing.
€œAt that distance you could see it was a big animal,€ he said.
Stretched out at full gait he guessed it measured 2m from tip to bushy tail.
€œI saw it side on and that€™s why I knew it was so huge,€ he said.
€œIt stood out amazingly.€
The man has only lived in the area for six months and had heard about various big cat sightings in Australia, but not the Karridale cougar.
€œI used to think it was people just drumming up tourism, but now I€™ve seen one,€ he said.
€œI don€™t know how it got here, but it€™s definitely here.€
Recent sightings of the coupan include some in 2004, when people saw such an animal at Ellensbrook Road and Carters Road.

A cougar doesn't have a bushy tail. I think that has to be ruled out. I have read reports going back 25 years or so of feral cats being killed and skinned that have been about 3ft without the tail. Thats a bloody big cat!

Sounds like one of those giant feral cats.
Its common for people who get a shock or fright (such as seeing some giant cat-like thing racing across a vineyard) to enhance the size when they give a description. Not because they are lying, but just because of their perception at the time.
Sometimes, when people have been mugged or whatever, they will say that their attacker was at least 6 foot tall, but when the mugger is actually caught they turn out to be considerable shorter. Its apparently a state of mind where we perceive the thing or person to be bigger than it is, because of the drama of the event itself, and its effect on the mind.
My point is that it could well be a cat he saw, as CE suggested. Albeit a huge one.

I have heard stories of 'BIG CAT' in the wanneroo/yanchep areas in the national park. My Dad has told me about these stories ever since I was a little girl at least 20 yrs.
Although I havent heard of any recent sightings (aprox last two yrs) I still hear of people telling the stories of the Yanchep big cat that was spotted many yrs ago.
I also heard that theories ranged from it being just a large domesticated cat to a bear to some kind of mutant (although in my opinion I think that is a bit of a long shot)
Has anybody else heard these stories???

There have been reports of a large bear being seen around the blue mountains area. Due to the fact that several circus' winter or retire their animals in that area , there has been suggestions that the bear either wanders off occasionally or was set free. Not enough reports to prove anything really. Just need to put it in the 'sh1t thats weird' folder.

Yanchep is to the north of Perth about a 20 minute drive. I believe the surrounding areas are Two Rocks and Quins Rock... oh isnt that terrible I have lived here all my life and I had to actually stop and think about where it was haha

one day (!) I want to drive into the more remote (but drivable) parts of the otways and spend the night waiting to see a big cat. or a yowie. or a ufo. or anything.....

Ok Mitzib, now I with you. Yes big cat and yowie sightings from out that way. Not heared of a bear out that way though.

The Otways are near Geelong. I saw a big cat near to there once.

Back in late October I travelled to the Stirling ranges (100kms north of Albany WA) with a friend in search of orchids . After some discussion we drove down a very quite road on the southern edge of the Stirling ranges to look for a particular orchid . This road goes to a dead end , national park on the left and a narrow strip of bush and then paddocks on the right . I would estimate less than 10 cars a year use this road no farm houses just paddocks so very deserted and quiet.
As we travelled along this road/track my friend stopped the car to view a bush that was in flower. While sitting in the passenger seat I was gazing up the track and spotted a black animal walking along the track 100-150mtrs away. It was about the size of a labrador but thinner, I saw it for less than 10 seconds before it headed into the strip of bush next to the paddock. This animal moved very smoothly sort of slinked along , I would say cat like movement. It was quite a slim animal with a long skinny upright tail and jet black glossy colour .
We drove up to where it disapeared into a narrow strip of bush (windows up) sheep were grazing contentedly on the other side of the thin bush strip , was this aniamal hiding close by ? If it was some sort of dog I would imagine that it would spook the sheep , but no the sheep were standing still grazing . An animal with a great deal of stealth was what we saw . Having all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up at the time and every time I discuss it after it happened spooks me a little but I am sure that this was a large cat/panther like animal .
Even 4 months on the image is still quite clear in my mind , this is a large national park and the area we were in is a long way from where most people go so anything is possible. Having not been a believer in big cats here in Austraslia before I certainly have a different view now !!!! :o

Marty can I suggest you report this on http://uqconnect.net/~zzpclach/index.htm Its important that these sightings get documented. There have definitely been sightings from WA if that helps.
