Powis Castle Wales

Best known for its 18th C garden, Powis Castle's origins lie in the easrly 13th C, when the Welsh princes of Powis turned it into a stronghold. The Welsh dubbed it Y Castell Coch- the Red Castle- because of the red sandstone employed in much of the early stonework. After various misadventures, Sir Edward Herbert bought Powis Castle in 1587. He began a restoration that would last until 1595. He transformed Powis from a rough border fortress into a repository of fine furniture and paintings. Although Powis Castle is now in the hands of the National Trust, the current earl of Powis still lives there.
Powis Castle was the scene of one of the most often told ghost stories in the principality. Back in 178, there had been, for some time a haunted bedroom in the castle. On no account would the veteran servants stay there overnight, but as a cruel joke by the other staff, a new maid was quartered there. The ghost of a very well-dressed gentlemen quietly entered the room, looked at her and as he left, awakened her. Frightened but nevertheless resolved to see the adventure through, she stood her ground as he repeated the performance for a second time. Finally, upon his thrid entrance, she asked him who he was.
Rather than explain, he asked her to follow him. She did, and they came to a place in the castle where a box was hidden, next to its key. The ghost informed her that if she took the two items to the earl, who was then in London, he would not return. After agreeing to this task she watched her visitor vanish. The maid was as good as her word. She brought the box and the key to London, and presented them to her master. The ghost, needless to say, was never seen again. But as we have seen, there are few castles that boast only one specter. Who knows? At Powis, you may find another one. It is worth a look!

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

As a matter of interest- Powis Castle was the ancestral home of some of Jazzas ancestors in one part of the family.

It's great when the old castles are preserved, whether by the National Trust or by residents.

I would love to go to this castle,
I think I read a book by Barbara Erskine set there in the 13th century,
Wow! its on the welsh marches isn't,
Any way one day we should plan an excursion, that would be wonderful.
