Clunes 'puma' on the prowl
20 Jul, 2010 01:03 PM
A BIG cat resembling a puma was claimed to have been spotted off Fairview Rd in Clunes last week.
Resident Wayne Glennie said his partner had gone for her morning walk when she saw a large cat in the bushes around 9am on Wednesday.

"It had a a distinct tail of a Cougar or Puma-type cat, it was a sandy colour with the tail quite recogniseable," Mr Glennie said.

"After she had a good look at it, it made itself very scarce and sneaked off into the bush."

A fortnight ago, Mr Glennie said he saw large footprints in the same area but initially thought they belonged to a hunting dog.

"Now we seem to be putting the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle," he said.

Council said they had no history of similar reports in the region.

"It's not an everyday occurrence but evidence suggests that they are out there for sure," Mr Glennie said.

Personally I think the footprint in the pic looks more like a dogprint..with the claw marks, cats have retracted claws..but I am not very educated in such things...

Cool. So close to us as well.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

LOL, you are forgetting one inportant fact; cats are smart, so the puma will bypass the kids and head for the two lovely ladies behind the bushes.

I'd be a hoot.   But I don't think people would believe it, even if they saw it on video....... because they don't want to.  The cry would go up 'Oh its just a person in a puma suit'.   (I'd be a bit too round for a puma suit, so we can rule that out!)

If they're waiting for some instant proof, like a puma ripping someone's head off, they'd better not hold their breath.  I think these cats are more timid than anything and I don't think for a minute that one would intentionally put itself in the spotlight (or headlights, as it were) unless it was starving - which I doubt, or possibly totally engrossed in a chase - pursuing its dinner.

Certain big cat types will be more aggressive (eg Lions, Tigers) than other types (Pumas, Ocelots Cheetahs). Since the Pumas fall into the latter, and as Satly stated, they are timid and most likely to be secretive.

One thing is for sure; they will never go hungry in the Australian bush.
