Haunted House on Adelaide Terrace: Perth: WA

Greetings once again lovers of all things "Ghostie".
The following yarn was found by headless, so please give a headless big thumbs up. Today's yarn for most of us easterners is over to the other side West Australia. Funny as most of us in the eastern states think of WA as "us mentality". But if you are an out of state visitor you may well know west Australian mentality of "us and them" regarding to eastern states? Perhaps the isolation of feeling left out? Regardless Western Australia which some times feels like a different country has a wonderful history of strange haunting stories, thus in tales of paranormal we are very much united?
Adelaide Terrace is the eastern extension of St Georges Terrace. It stretches from Victoria Square east to the Causeway, which bridges over the Swan River, to link Perth City to Victoria Park and suburbs south. Adelaide Terrace is a main arterial road to access Perth and is enjoying recent development through the construction of key up-market hotels and many blocks of fine inner-city apartments. The name is derived from the South Australian capital city
Traveling down the street you can see modern day progress every and the buildings of the last century almost swept away by time and progress. There are a few old house which hold on heritage protected but for how long will they be left neglected until they have to be demolished because the property in question is now worth at least 19 million dollars.
Yet here the building in question still stands empty. Defiant against the winds of change and alleged haunted?
But who or what?

The Following newspaper story Published by Mirror Perth, WA. Sat 18 Sep 1937
Some of the houses In Adelaide terrace are amongst the oldest in the State. They seem to stifle in their dimly lit rooms stories of a people who have passed on, people who lived in a world and time altogether foreign to us.
But if, as many people firmly believe, the spirits of another world pull eerie strings to dangle the skeletons in many a family cupboard, relating untold stories, then the occupiers of this house in Adelaide-terrace would be quite Justified in concluding that the spirits are trying to contact them.
Adelaide-terrace was named after Queen Adelaide, that beautiful but unhappy woman who was ill-treated by her royal consort and died finally in misery and distress. There seems no other reason why this old Terrace house should be singled out. Strangely enough, years ago, it was reported that at the front window of a house close by, which was at the time unoccupied, a giant hand used to be pressed every evening at dusk for passers by to see and shudder at. Its mystery was never cleared up.

At new or full moon, every night at exactly 7.25 p.m. the front door bell of this old house rings violently. It is not a continuous ring, but a mysterious, uncanny series of rings, as though someone were jerking violently on the cord of an electric bell. That is not the case here, for the bell is rung by a small knob on the outside of the door, and the residents, worked to a state of scared expectancy, have actually waited for the minute and, even as the ringing started, flung open the door to find nobody there. Nor is there anyone in the vicinity, nor any get-away.
Neighbours have heard the bell and watched; and, our informant tells us, even the police have been called In to solve the mystery. But so far a blank has been drawn.
On other occasions the lights of the house have gone out suddenly for no apparent reason. Electricians have been called in, but all efforts to find the cause have been unavailing. Still the lights remain out, only to flash on again of their own accord.

In the early hours of the morning, when there is not the slightest breath of air, windows and doors slam violently, and there is the loud noise of something clattering over the uneven floor.
One morning a lady in a room upstairs sat up and screamed as she heard her window slam violently several times. When the window was examined by others who rushed in, it was found to be securely fastened, and any movement at all was impossible.
Without anyone going near to turn it on, a tap will commence running. From the cellar below come sounds as though someone were rushing frantically about to escape a hidden horror. The obvious explanation for that would be the presence of rats. But it does not apply in this case, as no rat or trace of rat has ever been located in the building.

If anything else were needed to convince the residents that the house is haunted, they have it in the state of unoccupied bedrooms in which the beds, carefully made and unslept in, are found in the morning in scattered disorder about the rooms. The proprietor of the house has not experienced several of these uncanny and eerie happenings: but she has heard the door bell ringing the windows and doors slamming, and seen the taps running. Strangely enough, none of her children has been in any way affected by them.
But there you are. People who disbelieve in ghosts, and like most other people has yet to meet a real live one, have something to explain away in the old Adelaide- terrace house. Several ghost-layers have so far failed to put a stop to the uncanny occurrences.
It is believed the house later became a bank and so far has survived the ravages of time and developers. The house still sits there still defiant like the defiant ghost that haunted her.

Although separate and quite distinct buildings, former residences at 257 and 259 Adelaide Terrace share similar characteristics and histories which unites them as a unique pair of houses in the heart of the city. Both are substantial two storey masonry and iron Victorian houses dating from the pre-Gold Boom era that present two well resolved examples of the Victorian Italianate architectural style.
Similarly too, both houses have undergone extensive alterations that were typical of changes that occurred to other grand residences on Adelaide Terrace when many of them were converted into flats or commercial premises, and are now the only two-storey 1880s original residences to survive on the south side of Adelaide Terrace.
By the early 1870s, a number of leading citizens and their families had their residences in Adelaide Terrace which became an affluent and highly prized residential street in the city where “big houses” were being built by “big men”. Not only this, the properties on the south side of both Adelaide and St Georges Terrace extended down to the Swan River, and each residence had its own jetty and boat.

The construction of 257 & 259 Adelaide Terrace coincided with the first gold discoveries in the Swan River Colony in the 1880s which led to a renewed optimism for its future with great wealth forthcoming. This continued through up until World War One, after which flats started to appear in Perth, mostly created from the adaptation and dividing up of large houses owned by some of Perth’s more wealthy residents such as those on Adelaide Terrace to meet the growing post-war demand for accommodation for singles and young couples living and working in the inner city area. The domination today of the surrounding late twentieth century high rise buildings against old residence such as these, are a reminder of how much this part of the terrace has changed.
257 Adelaide Terrace was built as the family residence of successful colonial merchant Ernest Chawner Shenton. It was designed by Melbourne architectural practice, Terry & Oakden, and completed in 1888. Named ‘Sydenham’ the Shentons lived there with their five children.
In 1905, it was sold to another well-known Perth family, the Hayes who re-named it ‘Kincora’. The Hayes also lived an opulent and gracious life style at ‘Kincora’ where they raised their four children and housed several servants.
Their daughter, Sheila (later Gwynne) would go on to establish an outstanding career as an expert horse breeder, including breeding a Perth Cup winner, and made a significant contribution to the Western Australian horse-racing industry.
In the 1930s, the remaining sisters Eileen and Mary converted it into flats the sold it in 1955 when it was converted into commercial premise for the Motor Vehicle Insurance Trust and the Rural & Industries Bank of Western Australia.
In September 2003, the place was sold at auction for a major redevelopment but then quickly sold again to a private owner who had planned to live there but it has been vacant ever since.
Here is a picture of Ernest Chawner Shenton and picture of the house still stands today. Those guests who cannot see the pictures I suggest signing up to this wonderful forum to get a unique insight into haunted places in Australia. Some famous other not so well know but all have earned a right to be recorded in our own unique Australian ghost folklore.
The questions remained is the building still haunted today and By who?

The death of Ernest Chawner Shenton was no issue as he died back in Ireland in 1909. The haunting centered around the Hayes family. Curious the mother Vera Hayes was embroiled in a court case in 1901.
Evening Telegraph (Charters Towers, Qld. : 1901 - 1921), Friday 4 October 1901, page 2. reported the following story.
VERA HAYES.
July Again Disagree. ' Perth, October 8.
The second trial of Vera Hayes on a charged of blackmailing Deputy Postmaster General R. A. Sholl, has been concluded when tho jury again disagreed. The Crown then entered it '
nolle proneque
" and she loft the court amidst applause, and was cheered on reaching tho Street.
Vera Hayes was committed For trial at Perth (W.A.) For attempting to blackmail Mr. R. A. Sholl, tho Deputy Postmaster General. Some months ago the sum of £900 disappeared from the Post Office. Vera Hayes wrote saying that she possessed knowledge of a secret which would implicate tho Deputy Postmaster-General and his son Harry, who died on April 80, and she claimed £300 hush money. Mr. Sholl granted her an interview, and as soon as she had set forth her case a detective appeared from behind a screen and arrested her.
Tho young woman appeared to have known Harry Sholl, for, on bis death, she went to Busselton Hospital to see his body. The canard put about was that he was not really dead, but had been spirited away to South Africa.
Was this mysterious ghost actually Harry Sholl hiding out in empty house up the road from where where Vera Haynes was now living with a young family and living?
Was Harry Sholl alive or dead and was it he in person pr his unquiet spirit haunting the house?

This is an early post card of the former Perth General Post Office, built before Federation. It was formally opened on 27 August 1890 by the Administrator of WA, Sir Malcolm Fraser before the process of moving the GPO to the new premises was completed. The building is located opposite the Stirling Gardens (then known as the Government Gardens) in St Georges Terrace.
Its was in this building the theft and blackmail occurred. This might of been the driver of the alleged haunting after 1905 when the Hayes family moved into Ernest Chawner Shenton house on Adelaide Terrace.
Whatever the case the Hayes family was made of Sterner stuff because the haunting never really bothered the family as stated.
Was it the ghost of Mr. R. A. Sholl or his son Harry Sholl haunting the family that publicly shamed them?

Here is more on the late Harry Sholl.
The West Australian newspaper (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Wednesday 20 November 1901, page 7 reported the following.
THE LATE MR. HARRY SHOLL.
As a discreditable-and wholly unnecessary allusion has been made to the possibility of the late Mr. Harry Sholl being still alive, an allusion which, under the circumstances, must cause infinite and unwarranted pain to the members of his family, we have much satisfaction in publishing the following correspondence and documents, which should set the question' and all reference to it finally at rest.
To the Editor. Sir,Rex v. Vera Hayes.- Having been a witness, subpoenaed in the above case, heard in the Supreme Court before his Honour Mr. Justice Parker, on the 1st ult., together with several other residents from Busselton, and having, during my visit to Perth, extending from the date of the trial up to the present time, heard that the defendant still persists in stating that, Mr. Harry Sholl is living in South Africa, as report in the trial in your paper of the 2nd ult.
The following was a statement on oath: ."For some time she believed Harry Sholl dead, until she met and conversed with him. He was at present alive in South Africa." Seeing that many believe her statement, also that Mr. Harry Sholl is personated there, I desire to publish the facts in connection with his visit to me in this district in 1899, and his death at the Vasse Hospital on the 30th of April in that year.
I should feel grateful if you would publish this in your widely circulated journal, together with the following letters verifying my statement from well-known residents of Busselton, which establish-the fact that Mr. Harry Shell died here, and that, if he is being impersonated, as I am informed he is in South Africa, I trust the matter will be inquired into by the proper authorities, when, possibly, some light may be thrown.on the Post Office robbery of £900.
The late Mr. Harry. Sholl's friends in this district regret that the evidence bearing upon his death, and; as before stated, available in Perth when the case was being heard could not have been taken and published, which would have prevented any necessity for referring to the case again; but it appears that this false statement did not bear upon the charge preferred against the accused, and ,from a legal view of the case, it was unnecessary to refute it.
The facts .in connection with the late Mr. Harry Sholl's visit to me are as follows. He arrived at my house from Perth on the 30th of March, 1899. He appeared to be so very ill, and I felt so much alarmed about his state of health, that I sent for Dr. Hungerford. His health gradually became worse, until he was removed, on the 26th of April, to the Vasse Hospital, where he died on the 30th, having been treated there by Drs. Hungstford and Flynn, Dr. Hungerford, his father, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Pries, Nurse Newman, and Orderly Chambers being present.
The following morning the body was removed to my house, where it was seen by several friends who knew the young man well, and, after being on view for about two hours, I saw the coffin screwed down. Many followed the corpse to the railway station, and saw it placed in the train, for conveyance to Perth. I may state that I have known the deceased from infancy. That I could be be mistaken in his identity is utterly impossible.
The following residents in Busselton at the time referred to have very kindly, at my request, given me the following statements.-Yours, etc.. ELEANOR GUERIN. Albert-street, Busselton, November 15.
CORROBORATIVE STATEMENTS.
"I can corroborate Miss Guerin's statement above, so far as the late -Mr. Harry Sholl having stayed with her in April, 1899, having travelled from Perth to Busselton in the same train with him, and having stayed in the same house. .Miss Guerin's , during the greater part of the time he was there, also; that he was very seriously ill indeed. "JESSIE SHOLL."
'"Miss Guerin's statement above is perfectly correct. I saw. the late Mr. Harry Shell during his visit to Busselton in April, 1899. I assisted to take him from Miss Guerin's house to the Vasse Hospital, a few days before his death, visited him, frequently while there from the 26th to the 30th, was by his bedside, together with 'my wife, and others, when he died, saw him after death both at the Hospital, a few days before his death, he was taken before the coffin was screw ed down, witnessed this being done by the undertakers shortly before the appointed time for the departure of the train for Perth, followed the coffin to the railway station, and saw it-placed in the train on Monday the 1st of May, in the year stated, for conveyance to Perth for interment.
"A. R. PRIES." "I can testify the truth of the statement that the late Mr. Harry Shell was admitted into the Vasse Hospital, on Wednesday, the 26th April, 1899, and died there on the 30th.
" L. M. HUNGERFORD District Medical Officer.'"I can verify Miss Guerin's statement in many particulars, having seen the late Mr. Harry Sholl during his visit to Bussel-ton in April, 1899. I was well acquainted with him and saw him several times at my house before his illness prevented him going out. I saw him in his coffin, and followed with many friends from Miss Guerin's house to the Busselton railway station. "GEORGE CROSS." "The late Mr. Harry Sholl visited my store early in April, 1899. I noticed that he was very seriously ill, being ob liged to rest, before he could proceed on his way to Miss Guerin's residence, where he was staying.
"J. DAVIS." "Woodman's Point, Nov. 10, 1901. "I certify that the late Mr. Harry lSholl was nursed by me, assisted by Nurse Newman, at the Government Hospital Vasse, that his body was conveyed to Miss Guerin's residence, after having laid in the hospital mortuary 24 hours. Miss Guerin, Mr. and Mrs. Pries and Mr. R. A. Sholl, all saw the body immediately after death. I assisted to remove the body, and also to close the coffin."
"HENRY E. CHAMBERS." "I certify that the above statement is a true statement of facts." "ELIZ. J. CHAMBERS." "I removed the body of the late Mr. Harry Sholl, from the Vasse hospital to Miss Guerin's residence, on the 1st of May, 1899, and after the body had been lying in the coffin there some time, and seen by many friends, screwed it down, and removed the corpse to the railway station, where it was placed in the train, for conveyance to Perth, for interment." "C. J. HOUGH.' "Mr. Hough's statement is perfectly correct. I assisted him in the funeral arrangements an stated "F. DONALD."
While there seems there was many who claims saw him died but was he faking it ?
Just one of mysteries and whose hand was seen pressed up against the window years later? Did Harry scholl actually die and did he haunt the Hayes family in Adelaide terrace a few years later?

Harry Sholl's father Richard Adolphus (1847-1919), another brother, who was born on 18 December 1847 at Bunbury, was educated at Bishop Hale's school before becoming a post office clerk in 1863. Promoted chief clerk in 1873, he was appointed postmaster-general in 1889.
in time to encounter the extraordinarily rapid growth and congestion arising from the 1890s gold rushes. Often assailed in the press for the inefficiencies of an underfunded service with inexperienced staff, Sholl was in trouble in 1895 for failing to stop speculation in halfpenny surcharge stamps.
A man of method, with a soldierly appearance, he eventually managed to cope with the demands on the service, though earning a perhaps undeserved reputation as a martinet. When the Commonwealth took over posts and telegraphs in 1901, Sholl was deputy postmaster-general for Western Australia until he retired three years later.
A director of the Perth Building Society and member of the St George's Cathedral Choristers' Association, a patron of sport, a crack shot and a major in the Volunteers, he was at his happiest as honorary secretary of the Western Australian Turf Club for many years. He had married twice: on 19 September 1872 Eline Florence Ashton (d.1877), by whom he had a daughter and two sons; and on 7 January 1887 Mary Howard Sanders. He died in Perth on 9 May 1919 and was buried in Karrakatta cemetery.

Albany Advertiser (WA : 1897 - 1954), Tuesday 21 February 1899, page 3 newspaper reported the 1898 Robbery.
The Post Office Robbery.
Perth. Honda T. I
The Premier gave instructions fora portion of the official report on the telegraph robbery whereby £932 was stolen to be published. Portions have been excised for prudential and legal reasons The report contains little that is new. The Board consisting of Mr. Roe, P.M, and Mr. Sayer, secretary to the Law Department, blames Mr. Stephens far not taking more precautions when having so large a sum in bis possessions . Only for Mr Randell's obstinacy the report would have been available weeks ago.
He appears to have been afraid to take the responsibility till his chief returned. This is another instance «hat the Premier has to carry on the work of his Government single handed with the exception of perhaps Mr, Thompson.

Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889 - 1931), Thursday 15 December 1898, page 5 newspaper reported THE PERTH POST-OFFICE ROBBERY.
Perth, December 14.
No clue has yet been discovered as to who was the perpetrator of the robbery of £930 from the post-office Widespread indignation is expressed at the action of the Government in not paying their employees whose salaries were poor. Many of whom are in difficulties through being kept without their Salaries.
There was suspicions that Harry scholl was guilty of the theft? And his father the post master general perverted the source of justice.
With of course Vera Hayes making the claims that Harry Sholl's death was staged for his to avoid justice. It is not surprising animosity from Sholl family to the Haynes family hoping to persevere their public image. Vera Hayne moved into the house just 5 years later and encounter a frantic haunting and bell ringing?
Was there a connection with this alleged paranormal activity and alleged suspicious Death of Marry Sholl implicated in the 1898 robbery of the Post office?
I leave that question open for you to decide.
