Only a few days later on September 20th 1952 Noel Peterson was found in Victoria Park severely beaten around the head. He died in hospital later that day. When he regained consciousness before his death, he refused to give any details about who had attacked him.

During the Second World War Victoria Park was turned into a military barracks. The flagpole erected at the time still stands at the top of the car park at the Centenary Pool.  This barracks remained as housing commission housing for a short period after the war before the area was made a park once more.  In 1947, during its time as housing commission housing, an outbreak of gastro enteritis saw the deaths of eighty four people in the park, including children and infants, over a very short period of time.

Now that we have explored some of the many deaths and tragedies of Victoria Park, we have come to the first of many alleged paranormal events to plague Victoria Park?

Thorough research has not found whether this is merely an urban legend created around the events of 1965 or whether this is true? An investigation into the newspaper archives has so far shown no record of any paranormal events at this site other than what is mentioned in the Courier Mail in 1965?

In 1903 we apparently have what is known as the first sighting of the grey ghost or the nun of the Victoria Park tunnel. According to the Courier Mail article of November 23 1965, “In 1903, special police squads were assigned to control vast crowds gathered to glimpse the ghost.”

The Courier Mail, November 23 1965, p3 newspaper claimed  It was described as looking like a tall nun floating through the tunnel towards the lake on the Inner City Bypass side.  In 1932 there was apparently a second sighting of the ghost.

This time it was less like a nun but still had the appearance of a human reaching out and heading for the lake.  This all leads to the most famous haunting in Brisbane’s history that saw over five thousand people gathering to search for the ghost in November of 1965.

Many have told and retold this story and it has a mythology all of its own.  Rather than retell this story that has been told time and time again, examine the attached articles below for the details of this insane time in Brisbane’s paranormal history.

Here is a picture of hysteria created in 1965 to the alleged ghost sighting. For those guests that cannot see the the picture blow? I suggest signing up to the forum to get a unique insight into own Australian ghostly folklore?

Liam Baker gives a more detailed account of the alleged 1965 ghost encounter....

"The episode began in November 1965, after a group of local children overheard rumours suggesting a ghost had been observed within a tunnel beneath the rail line bordering Victoria Park.  The following night, the intrepid ghost hunters crept down in the hope of spotting this spook.

One boy, lagging behind the rest of the group as they passed through the tunnel, experienced more than he could have imagined.  As he endeavoured to catch up to his friends, he was accosted by a misty green, armless, legless, headless apparition that seemed to materialise from the wall of the tunnel.

Seemingly "mesmerised" by the spectre, the boy was dragged by his friends to the nearby Royal Brisbane Hospital - his companions feared he had been possessed by the ghost.

The ensuing tale, as related by the children to hospital staff, made sensational newspaper headlines the next day and within a short time, thousands of local residents were lining both sides of the tunnel in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the ghost.  For the next week, the Victoria Park ghost became the major talking point of Brisbane, not to mention a fantastic opportunity for family outings."

Here is a artist rendition of what was seen from a  newspaper account below.

Sydney Mail (NSW : 1912 - 1938), Wednesday 1 April 1936, page 32 newspaper reported below.

A Ghost Scare

AN uncanny memory was recalled by an old Queenslander when visiting the northern capital recently after a lapse of 30 years. Like the rest of Brisbane, the general hospital has grown beyond recognition. In the earlier days there was no provision for dealing with infectious diseases on an epidemic scale; so when

scarlet fever suddenly broke out the cases had to be accommodated by the erection of tents in Victoria Park, then densely wooded, and a little distance away. The nurses had many scares of one kind and another in the lonely encampment, but none so great as the ghost scare.

It happened one moonlit night when the shadows, amid an eerie stillness, played fantastic tricks. Two nurses off duty had proceeded a little distance on their way across the park when they suddenly became aware of a ghostly figure in front of a large tree. They did not, as novelists have said, become rooted to the spot, neither did their blood freeze. But they fled back to the encampment, holding their skirts high and screaming. The nurse in charge, a very practical woman of the no-nonsense type, said 'pooh, pooh,'

and proceeded to investigate. But her investigation, undertaken alone, was not of an exhaustive character. She, too, raced back, and promptly 'phoned the gatekeeper at the hospital. 'There is someone over there,' said she, 'trying to frighten the nurses. Send anyone handy over at once.' In response several male officers raced across. They were taken to the spot by the matron, and, to their amazement and some superstitious awe, beheld the ghost. It was there, head and shoulders only, staring at them with eyeless sockets.

They shouted 'shoo!' and threw stones. But the ghost did not move, and continued to stare. Then, a venturesome one advanced towards the apparition with a large missile ready poised. As he drew closer the ghostly figure began to fade, and when he reached the tree it had disappeared. He backed away cautiously and the ghost reappeared. Several times the experiment was repeated with the same result.

The ghost appeared and disappeared with monotonous regularity. A close examination of the tree was then made, and it was found that the rays of the moon were falling upon certain markings on a stripped portion of the trunk. Shadows completed the illusion. — 'Vignette.'
