« on: January 19, 2022, 02:00:54 PM »
While we perceive all ghosts the victims of some strange horrible death? Yet some ghosts appear to be benign reminders of a forgotten time?

The following ghost appears to one of the late. William carter died peacefully at home in his beloved house Findon hill built in 1875 on 18th of January 1910. He had enjoyed 35 years of blissful existence among the gardens of his 1875 blues stone gothic 3 bedroom house.

It appears he loved the place so much even in death at the age of 77 years.

For those guests who cannot see the following pictures I suggest signing up to this wonderful forum to get a unique insight into haunted places in Australia.

Hidden between the tree a classic Gothic rival home can be barely seen from the road and is private residence. However over the years there has been reported of apparition of elderly who at times been seen in the house and around the overgrown gardens. A peaceful spirit perhaps still in state of bliss unable or un-wanting  to pass over.

Various owners and visors in quiet moments have detected the old mans presence perhaps keeping an eternal watchful eye over the old place.

Reports of "Will " as he is affectionately known as unobtrusive ghost that is some times seen in quiet moments of house. In some rooms his presence is felt more than most. Most who have encountered him as an old man balding white bearded with black waist coat and a old fashioned pocket watch. Some times he is seen as described by some with cheeky grin others a serene sense of bliss?

Most people who have encountered him tend not to be afraid of him but get a feeling of calm serenity from him.....

Is William Carter trying to tell us some thing?

He was born in Monmouth Wales in 1851 he married Lavinia ihis wife in 1851. They emigrated as agricultural workers in 1857 on the ship that took 140 days to get to Australia called Mt Stuart Elphinstone .

His will and probate show he had over 3400 pounds of land as he was a retired farmer. He had 200 acre farm a further 90 acre farm and another lots of land adding up to 10 acres and another 11 acres still adding up to over 311 acres. That and having several bank accounts with about 3400 pounds.

So he was a rather successful immigrant who prospered in his new life in Australia.

Strange enough in the probate suggested that William was rather tight with his money as his daughter Anne put a claim in for several unpaid wages adding up to 340 pounds. All property and assets it appears from the will went to his Wife Lavinia. She was 75 at time of his death.

William Carter who was a JP and at one time employed as farmer and Butcher in which had done very well for himself bought the Gothic  Findon Hill off a man called Wood who had died. Carter had three daughters and perhaps a son already deceased.

His daughters Elizabeth Carter Wells died 1935 and Emily Carter Died 1905 Wells and daughter in law Ann Carter died in 1947.

Ann was married to William Carters Son. William James Carter who died in 1901. She is buried in the same grave plot in Kyneton cemetery. Anne died in 1947.

She had a daughter and son William Carters grandchildren William Lesley Carter died 1957 and Ruby Beatrice Carter died 1974.

Lavinia lived at Findon Hill at age 90 in around 1925.

Findon Hill constructed c1875 as the residence of W H Hood, ( Newspaper in 1910 said Wood? ) manager of a Piper Street store, is of State significance as one of Victoria's finest Gothic style dwellings. This tiny two-storeyed residence constructed of local bluestone with a gabled slate roof and wide eaves is notable for its pointed arched stone porch and fine detailing. On an elevated site Findon Hill is a prominent feature on the fringe of town in a picturesque garden. The property's singificance is enhanced by the double-storeyed timber stables, one of just a handful in the Shire.

Here is an photograph below of what the house appeared to look like in the turn of the century.
