Capertee Valley Ghost: Glen Davis NSW
« on: September 22, 2021, 12:27:15 PM »
When the Australia Band, Wildland, filmed a music video for their title song Wildland, something unnerving and creepy was discovered, while the video was being edited.

In 1990, the band had spent the day filming this video in the remote ghost town of Glen Davis, in New South Wales. From 1939 to 1952, the National Oil Proprietary Limited extracted oil in this area. The facility was not the safest. Long work hours led to fatigue, and faulty equipment that was salvaged caused many workmen’s deaths.

The day of the shoot the weather was rainy and bleak, all the members of the band and camera crew, all stated that the atmosphere at this location had an otherworldly or eerie feel to it. On the day of filming, this ghost town was deserted, except for the band and their film crew. But the group discovered later, while watching what they shot, that a ghostly figure appears leaning against a concrete pillar.

It is faceless, wears a dark overcoat, and a hat, and at one point on the video, it seems as if its head is detached from the rest of its body.

After this strange sight was discovered, the band and crew, meticulously accounted for the whereabouts of everyone while this scene was shot. After viewing the video, no one could identify this mysterious figure.

None of them saw this figure during the shoot.

You can see the picture below of the alleged ghost caught in the background of a music video below. For those guest that cannot see the still I suggest signing up to this wonderful forum to see amazing pictures of haunted Australia.

The town’s historian, who lived there as a child, thinks this ghost may be a miner who was killed. His body was washed downstream, to the spot where the figure appears in the film.

Another possibility is the figure is the spirit of a priest who committed suicide near the deserted machine shop, where the video was filmed. Could the dark clothes seen on this figure be the dark robes of a priest?

One possible person that might be the ghost on the video is retort worker that was killed instantly in 1946.

The Lithgow Mercury (NSW : 1898 - 1954), Wednesday 20 March 1946, page 2 reported...

Accidental Death Verdict In Glen Davis Accident

At an enquiry into the death at Glen Davis, of William Wakefield, employed as an ashman at Glen Davis National Oil Pty. Ltd., 'the

Coroner (Mr. Edwin John McQuiggin) found that Wakefield had died from the effects of injuries accidentally received on February 11, through being' crushed between a skip and cam gear under the retorts at the National Oil Pty. works.

Sgt. Allport assisted the Coroner, Mr. James A. Frazer represented the Department of Labor and Industry and Social Services, Mr. W. A. Gregory represented the Western Miners' Federation, of which deceased was a member; and Mr. C. J. Norcross, superintendent, appeared for National Oil Pty. Ltd. Dr. Rupert Catalano said death was due to major abdominal injuries

—the lower extremities having been severed from the trunk at the level of the pelvis. He was of the opinion that death had been instantaneous.

"CAREFUL WORKMAN"

Describing Wakefield's duties, Rodney Dunnett Hastings Browne, oi Red Rock Circle shift foreman at Glen Davis, said the deceased, who began work at midnight, was attending the ash elevator and hood (where the skips take shale to the cam and there tips them onto elevator.

At 7.15 a.m. Wakefield asked for a cigarette "paper. Witness gave him several and he (Wakefield) left the foreman's office. On that occasion deceased appeared quite normal, in possession of all his faculties and in good health and spirits. He was not under the influence of' alcohol. Browne added that he regarded Wakefield as being a careful workman and not one to take any unnecessary risks.

When notified or the accident he viewed the body, then notified the doctor, ambulance and superintendent. Albert William Anderson, retort hand, told  of conversations he had had with deceased, who informed him that he was going to look at the pit and asked him to stop the elevator when he (Anderson) had finished the run.

Witness stated that at the time he was working at the ground level of the retorts doing what is called "ash dropping." On that particular shift he was controlling the movement of skips taking the ashes from underneath the retorts. During one of the operations, he saw, through the haze of dust, a slight movement near the entrance to an ash pit.

The movement appeared to be as if something was going into the ash pit on the centre skip. ;

RACED TO SWITCH

Anderson ' told the court he raced to the emergency power off switch

he searched the skips and asked the sub-foreman if "Wakefield had gone for a shower." Accompanied by sub-foreman Smith, witness searched for Wakefield and found him caught between a skip and a cam. Wakefield appeared to be badly injured and unconscious.

To the Coroner: The only explanation I can give is that Wakefield walked up from the pit and walked in front of the skips. , I am definite he was caught by the second skip as that was where his body was found. Clement John Norcross, carbonising superintendent, tendered a plan of the site and gave a comprehensive description of the results of his examination.

In' answer to a question by Mr. Gregory, he said the plant had been designed by a firm of consulting engineers. Since the accident a further stop station had been installed to enable the ash dropper to precede the skips almost to the mouth and give him an uninterrupted' view of the mouth of the cam gear discharge house. Warning bells had also been fixed to the ash skips.

Danger notices and guard rails had been erected near the scene of the accident and apparatus was being installed which would permit skips to be stopped in an emergency from any point along the track.

WARNING BELLS PREFERRED

Norcross told Mr. Gregory lie was not in a position to say that had the apparatus been installed it would have prevented the accident. In reply to the Coroner, Mr. Norcross, who stated that warning bells had been, attached to skips, said he regarded bells as being a much more efficient system of warning of movement of skips than colored lights. A man would have to be facing the skips to see the colored lights and if her could see the lights then he could see the skips. Witness said this was the second serious accident. He considered that steps should be taken to make everyone aware of the movement of skips and providing the usual amount of care was exercised further accidents might be prevented.

But it was not the only fatality at Glen Davis?

Lithgow Mercury (NSW : 1898 - 1954), Monday 12 April 1948, page 1 Reported thew following.

Glen Davis Miner Believed Killed In Big Fall

Buried beneath tons of earth and rock when the tunnel in which he was working caved in at 9 o'clock this morning, Mr. H. O. Wade, an employee of the Glen Davis mine, is believed to have been killed

instantly, while the loading machine -alongside which he was working was also covered in the fall.

Workmates, who commenced rescue operations immediately after the fall, had' not recovered the victim's body at midday, hut it was felt there was no chance of. his survival. Wade, who had been employed at the colliery for only two months, is-, reported to be a resident of Glen .Davis and a married- man with five children. He was operating a watering hose in number three board of seven west section when the fall occurred in the '"solids" and not the pillar section as was first believed. So extensive was the fall that the loader machine and Wade, were covered completely. Immediately the danger of further falls was past, workmates rushed to the victim's assistance, but it was obvious that he had little chance of survival. An explanation of the accident has been forwarded to the Government.

Inspector (Mr. Perkins) and the Miners' Federation. The area where the fall occurred was "fired" last night on the afternoon shift, according to, a mining official who explained that the duty of the man, operating the- watering hose was to go into such areas in order in order to reduce the dust level before . other employees commenced working.

LATER. At the time of going to press Wade's, body had not been recovered.

Did his body every get recovered?

I tend to suspect the alleged ghost was William Wakefield, who was cut in half by the skip. One thing intrigues me is shouldn't his ghost be in two half's? Or perhaps regardless of physical body condition in death his ghost would appear as whole person?

If this was the case we would not have headless ghosts?

Wow, that photo is very good.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

Digging deeper into the history of the site there seems no evidence in the newspapers of the day a suicide took place there by a priest or anyone else that seems to be a urban myth added to abandoned site.

The abandoned bus and truck gives a zombie apocalypse feel to the site.

You can almost feel ghost passengers inside the bus awaiting a ride that never comes.
