« on: January 10, 2021, 10:56:52 AM »
In the rural back blocks of South Australia there are little hamlets almost lost and forgotten almost totally deserted ghost villages.

The tiny hamlet of Hanson is one such village blink and you would pass it. But if only one cares to look there is an old stone house looking lost and forlorn. A forgotten story of a forgotten time and place.

Many years ago a swaggie a man of the road had a strange encounter there an encounter on the dark side?

The Swaggie named Brian was once a Westpack bank employee many year ago. But for his own reasons he let gainful employment. He chose a different life of roaming the back roads of Australia working in rural settlements and farms moving from place to place sleep under bridges where ever he could kip down for the night.

His encounter was told by him to the proprietor of Burke and will road house on the Normonton development road in West Queensland in the Mid 1990's.

This is his story.

He had been traveling in rural areas of South Australia walking on foot to a place that had some work. On the way he had to pass through the small settlement Hanson when looking for a place to bed down for the night. Normally he would of unrolled his swag and  slept under the starts. But this night in question a rare event occurred a massive rain event and the rain came absolutely thumping down.

Arriving at Hanson looking like a proverbial drown rat with everything he owned was wet. Hanson looked abandoned group of buildings at the time. A rural left over from another time. Its was dark and he sort shelter under the bull-nose veranda of old stone building that appeared to be boarded up. He huddled on an old wooden bench the seat and rain sheeted over the bull-nose veranda in a roaring waterfall.

Wet cold and hungry he huddled under the ancient veranda during the roar of the falling rain.

During the night Brian cold wet huddled on the bench near the front Door as the rain bucketed down. In desperation he thought the old place might be abandoned and unlocked? So he tried the front door to astonishment as he tried the handle the door opened....

Inside was a middle aged women looking also astonished to see him as you would? But seeing Brian wet to the bone she kindly let him inside. There was another gruff short of fellow (sorry we don't allow swearing on the forum)ting at the table in another corner of the room, that gave and uncomfortable evil glare at Brian that made him uncomfortable however the women kindly let him to sit down next to the fire.....for a swaggie being cold and wet drying off nicely by the fire and the long toll of walking had made him very tired. Where is no time soon next to the cracking fire he fell asleep.

Brian awoke in the first light of day sitting on a old raggedly on armchair in a dusty abandoned empty room. There was no sign of the people he met while he entered the room late in the middle of the night? Most startling of all there had been no fire in the fire place all night and no trace of charcoal? Frighteningly there was much dust on the floor and the only foot prints was his to the armchair next to fireplace?

Most of rooms was totally empty with dust on the floors a house that had been empty for years. But the night before during the heavy rain there was a women and a man and furniture in the house and crackling fire.

Totally baffled and confused he gathered up his swag and continued his journey to a station where he was going to work for awhile.

However curiosity got the better of him and it haunted him for a few years. Did he just dream it all? But it seem so real but surreal at the time? Eventually life dulled the memory of the strange event . But later when he was sleeping an old shack used as accommodation quarters for shearers on a station down in the Yorke peninsular he was working on. There was stack of old faded newspapers,

One such newspaper was the Northern star  Lismore dated Thursday 19th of July 1951. It told of a story of murder suicide. Ruben Rogers aged about 50 and Stella Rogers 42. It had appeared he had murdered his wife and shot himself in the head. The place of this tragedy was at a small hamlet in Hanson South Australia.

The newspaper story is posted below for those who cannot see the picture I suggest signing up to the forum to see some intriguing pictures of haunted places in Australia.

Yet there is a little more to this macabre story....

The question remains is the place still haunted by those tragic events today?
