A murder victim haunts a regenerated upmarket apartments. People staying at the apartments have encountered a phantom of a middle age man with pleading eyes covered in blood clutching his chest as if in pain with blood spurting from his chest. Falls and vanishes leaving witness to the apparition rather dumb founded horror.

Situated at the Spring Street end of Little Bourke Street, Gordon House, originally known as 'Coppin's Improved Lodgings and Dwellings', was established in 1883 by a group of philanthropists led by George Coppin.

Modelled on apartment complexes in Europe and designed by William Pitt, it was intended to provide moderately priced tenement accommodation with running water and piped gas for working-class families. The original concept was a failure and the complex was soon converted into lodgings for single men, providing institutional accommodation for homeless men for much of the 20th century. After closing its doors in 1975, it was refurbished and reopened in 1978 as an up-market hotel, now known as Gordon Place.

It was in the years as an institutional refuge from homeless men our ghostly apparition came from.

Here is some olden day pictures below showing some sad old desperate and depressed men living at center.

For those guests who cannot see the pictures I suggest joining up to the form. To get a unique pictorial insight into haunted places in Australia.

One thing for sure there is several candidates for this gruesome apparition?

The first known death at Gordon house was a reported in the Melbourne Argus Tuesday 6th of August 1907.

Suicide in 1907

DEATH AT GORDON HOUSE.

A man was found dead in his room at Gordon-house, Little Bourke-street, yesterday morning, under circumstances which point to suicide. The body was found by a wardsman named Softleigh. It was lying
on the floor, with the throat cut, and a razor was gripped in the left hand.

The deceased's name is believed to have been H. Bennett. He was about 40 years of age, and bore the appearance of a labouring man. A hospital ticket, with the name ? off, was found in the room. The deceased
had lately complained of illness and agonising pains, which may have provided a motive for suicide. The body has been removed to the Morgue, and an inquest will be held.

In 1949 a newspaper reported the following.

GRUESOME MÜRDER IN MELBOURNE.

MELBOURNE, Sun.-One of the most gruesome murders in the history of Victorian in
crime was committed in the heart of Melbourne tonight. In a dimly-lit basement room of Gordon House, Little Bourke St., the body of a 50-year-old man was found with a huge cross carved across his trunk.

He is believed to be William Stewart, who booked into the home for men a few days ago. Immediately his corpse was discovered, top-ranking Homicide Squad detectives were assigned to the case.

Stewart's body was slashed with either a knife or a hatchet. The gaping wound extended from
his ribs to the base of the trunk, and across the waist. Police are unable so early in the investigation to attach any special significance to the nature of the wounds.

A few hours before the discovery by Frederick Seymour, the occupant of the room, the dead man was seen
in the city. Seymour walked into his room tonight- and discovered his friend's body sprawled on the floor.
Detectives have established thát the victim was, booked in a dormitory in another part of the old building.

He is believed to be a homeless old man whose, true identity might? not be easily revealed, because he
used different names. The room in which he was found showed no sign of a struggle. Detectives questioned the old men living in the hostelry, but no person has yet given a clue.

On Christmas Day 1950, William Stewart 53 years old was found in a basement room rented by another man known as Kharlsen badly mutilated. The crime scene was quite disturbing, Stewart’s body was laying face down in the centre of the room, his right leg and arm was detached and his head was almost decapitated, and a large cross carved in his chest. There was also a lot of vomit in the to suggest Kharlsen could not handle disposing of the body. Kharlsen admitted he had started to cut up the body with a table knife but could not finish the job and had to leave. Kharlsen was found to be suffering religious mania and was committed under the Governors pleasure and sent to Kew Lunatic Asylum.

On February 6th 1974 Leonard James Harris, 51, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court, on a charge of having murdered a vagrant Jim Parker, 44 who was found with his throat cut in Gordon House, Little Bourke Street, Melbourne on the 5th of February.

So we have 3 victims 2 of gruesome murder and one of Suicide so its hard to know which one is actally haunting the complex?

I can't wait until the next Post KANACKI, as I am sure Gordon House may reveal more ghastly deaths and perhaps other clues as to who is the Spirit known as "The Bleeding Man".

Hello Simon

Sadly that is the only cases I know of connected to the building. The ghost of Bleeding man could be one of the two or both we just do not know?

Inside much of the old building has been converted into apartments.

Inside many apartments are modern and rather ritzy. As you can see in the pictures below .

The court yard is now a fashionable pool area and adjoining courts yard with a modern lift constriction. I wonder what the old tenants of the place would think. Or the new ones if they knew how many murders and suicides had taken place around and near the pool area?

And what of the ghost of the bleeding man think? His last early abode now classy rental accommodation?

Perhaps this apparition would approve of this once rundown dosh house for vagrants that has turned into luxury apartments as a new place to haunt?

Very "swish" indeed KANACKI, I must make a note of the address, in case I find myself in town. LOL

It never ceases to amaze me how many people move in and around spirits without even knowing or feeling these poor lost souls.

Hello Simon

Perhaps there are environmental triggers in perceiving these ghosts?

KANACKI, this certainly a factor but it is really about each individuals empathy levels, the higher the better.

However, controlling this empathy, as it is like a sponge, sucking in both negative and positive energies and can be debilitating when we get too much negative energy. From personal experience it can result in feeling or being physically sick. Yuck!! LOL

Ah, The Quest Apartments. I have stayed here a few times and it is certainly haunted.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.
