Ghost of Room 8 Russel Hotel: Sydney
« on: August 13, 2018, 02:26:03 PM »
Ah whats a city where you cannot book a haunted hotel room over night.

All major cities have one. Sydney is the same.

Located in the heart of The Rocks, The Russell Hotel is steeped in history and certainly has plenty of characters that has passed through its door.

Another fine old pub that has withstood the test of time and development.

Room 8 is said to be haunted by the spirit of a sailor. Guests have described seeing him standing in the room staring at them.

There are also numerous reports of someone walking at night over creaky floorboards, but when staff go to investigate the noise, there’s no-one there.

Is the spirit of an angry sailor perhaps mad that his life was cut short?

Or some thing else?

Hi KANACKI, I don't think, if there is a spirit of a sailor, walking at night across creaking floorboards or staring at people in Room 8, is angry.

I get a feeling from the photograph, that the sailor wants to move on, but doesn't know how and because most people cannot "see" or "fill" his presence, he has gotten frustrated over time and yes, perhaps he may want to re-join his comrades on his ship.

Hello Simon

My apologies I have been very sick as of late. So  in regards to this story it is rather misleading the ghost was actually one of the landlords who always wore a sailors cap. We do not know for sure if he had been a sailor in his early life. It appears his life was rather well document.

While running the hotel his wife ran off having a younger man after they was discovered their illicit affair in Room 8. After they had left he continued operating the hotel. Perhaps with all of these bitter issues he did not notice the trap door open in the barroom floor to the cellar where he fell down fracturing his skull and never recovered.

It may be possible that he with unresolved issues he is unable to cross over. As room 8 as couples stay there in his room is constant reminder of the pain he himself felt cheated on by his wife.

Hello Simon

While during the inquest it was suspected he received his injuries falling down the trap door to Cellar.  Police believe it was from injuries  from an assault. The perpetrator fled Sydney with his wife.

Here is a picture below of the alleged haunted Room 8.

Stories abounded at the time tells of wild sex parties in the upper rooms of the hotel in the early 1950s. The claims was Allan Leon Watson aged 41 assaulted the publican Bertram May 57 in a fit of jealous rage at a wife swapping party. The result of the head injuries as if he had been struck over the head with a hard object. The inquest at the time could not determine if it was a fall through the trap door in the floor of the  bar into the cellar or Bertram had been struck with a hard blunt object?

Police believed it was an assault that led to the death of Bertram while the inquest led an open finding.

Yet the police believed they had enough evidence to charge Watson with Murder.

It should be noted the name of hotel changed and reverted back to the original hotel name. Today its called the Russel Hotel named after the street it is on. During the 1940's it was known as the Port Jackson hotel.

So imagine for those interest in experiencing a possible ghost encounter? Room 8 the Russell hotel seems to be the place where an encounter may happen?

As you can see the hotel downstairs is historic. From the Photographs below. For those guests who cannot see then I suggest joining the Forum to see amazing things.

The story "Thickens" KANACKI, especially with the Police issuing a Warrant for the arrest of Allan Leon Watson for the Murder of Bertram May.

Having the Spirit of Bertram May wandering the Hotel, especially Guest Room 8, perhaps where Bertram was murdered by Allan, who continues to wander the Hotel until justice is completed, which may be difficult as all other persons involved, would have most likely passed-away.

Hello Simon.

Yes indeed the plot does thicken. As far as I understand the murder charge case it appears fell through as the in question was not certain on how the injuries  happened but felt more inclined to believe the injuries was from a fall through the  trap door in the bar to the cellar.

Of course modern forensics many of came to a different conclusion.

perhaps you are right a man murdered felt disinclined to pass over as justice was never served?

KANACKI, unless we get more information regarding the incident or input from other Members, we can put a "Hold" on the Post.

Do you agree, as it is your Post and have "the final say"?

Hello Simon

Perhaps at point of death of publican if it was actually an accident and not a murder. His lingering spirit may in resentment of his personal relations. After all they are powerful drivers of emotions?  There is it appear a powerful emotional reason for him to linger on.

I agree with you KANACKI, the Publican is not crossing over as he does not feel "Justice" has not been completed and will stay in that Spiritual World between the Physical and True Spiritual World.

Hello Simon

I think you might be right? Is it the injustice of his wive'e allege infidelity? Or is it of his untimely murder or both?

I suspect if he was given redemption by acknowledging these suspicions that perhaps his spirit will feel vindicated?

Hi KANACKI,

You are probably correct on both aspects; His wife running off with a younger person and his early demise.

I think he fell through the open trap door due to inattention caused by thinking about his wife running off.

How is your health now KANACKI?
