Ghosts of the Roo Hotel: Maldon VIC
« on: September 06, 2021, 05:34:39 PM »
The Kangaroo Hotel opened in 1856, and today is the only Kangaroo Hotel in Australia.

Affectionately known as 'The Roo', the hotel started as a tent, before moved from nearby Fryerstown where a brick structure was erected. One of 40 pubs in the Maldon area and The Kangaroo has stood the test of time.

It has operated as the town morgue, a butcher shop, doctor's office, theatre and Cobb and Co. changing station.

You never know what ghosts of the past you may encounter?

It's not only restless human souls possessing this time honored drinking hole. The picturesque Kangaroo Hotel in the historic goldfields town of Maldon is said to be also haunted by the spirits of ten horses, who perished in a tragic stable fire in the 1870s.

But there is also it seems...Human tragedies associated with the tavern had impact of haunting the grand old pub.

To be continued....

A terrible tragedy happened in 1907.

Morgans Courier  newspaper (Mount Morgan, WA : 1904 - 1911), Wednesday 11 September 1907, page 4

A Maidon Suicide

HOTELKEEPER TIRED OF LIFE. MELBOURNE, Sept. 10.

John Lanyon, licensee of the Kangaroo Hotel, Maldon, committed suicide by throwing himself down the well. He first locked up his wife and servant in the house.

Does the ghost of John Lanyon still haunt the Kangeroo Hotel?

Here is a picture of the Hotel below.

For those who cannot see the picture I suggest signing up to the wonderful forum to see amazing haunted places in Australia.

If passing by please drop into these places as they sorely need our support soaking in atmosphere and a little history.

And perhaps even encounter a ghost or two?

Oh my gosh. This place is owned by a friend of my partner. In fact, we were speaking this week about going and visiting it next week and having a meal there!!
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

It would be good to find out if the well is still in existence because that is where John Lanyon allegedly committed suicide. Perhaps that location is the center of paranormal activity in the pub.

It should be noted the ordinal pub mysteriously burned down in 1907. The Pub was insured.

The present pub is built on the site of the old pub.

Bendigo Advertiser (Vic. : 1855 - 1918), Monday 7 January 1907, page 5  Newspaper stated the following.

HOTEL DESTROYED.

Maldon, 5th January.

The well-known Kangaroo hotel destroyed by fire this evening. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The adjoining properties were also damaged. The Licensee is Mrs Piggott, late of Bendigo and the owner Mr. W. J. Bryant, of the Springs Brewery. The property was insured.

On the 10th of September John Laayon, licensee of the Kangaroo Hotel, Maldon, committed suicide. Was the trauma of the fire too much for him or was it just failing business? Could be be the ghost haunting the Kangaroo Hotel?
