Paranormal activity at Franklin House: Launceston TAS
« on: July 06, 2018, 12:22:35 AM »
Set among the green northern Tasmanian countryside lurks a house of mystery.

By day, Franklin House is a tourist attraction with sprawling gardens, precious antiques and a cosy tearoom.
The grand home was built in 1838 for Britton Jones, a former convict who became an innkeeper and brewer.
Within four years he had leased the property to school master William Keeler Hawkes to run an academy for boys.

You can see a picture of the house below. For those guest who cannot I suggest you sign up to this wonderful forum to see amazing things.

National Trust volunteer Leonie Ingram is one of several staff members who have had unusual experiences while working there., made the following statement below...

"I've noticed a few things move around and it could just be somebody else doing it, just enough to make me notice that it was a bit unusual that it kept happening," Ms Ingram said.

Was there a haunting or just over active imaginations connecting any old house with some ghosts of sorts?

Kanacki had to dig deeper? No pun intended :-)

In June 21 2013 the Tasmanian Herald reported the Following story below.

'There's definitely something here'

MANIKA DADSON

SOMETHING cold just passed Tano Orlando's hip.

And ``someone's touching me on the back of the neck,'' Dane Wrigley said.

But no one is there.

``We tried to debunk it as a cold breeze, or something but we couldn't, because there were no draughts,'' Mr Orlando said.

The Tas Ghost Hunting Society is investigating Franklin House, at Youngtown, for paranormal activity and they have just had a personal experience.

The experience is one they couldn't back up with camera evidence, but it is one they all felt.

``We just went all cold,'' Mr Orlando said.

A week and a half later, the team has put together evidence of what they found at Franklin House and they agree on two things.

``The place isn't haunted, but it does have paranormal activity,'' Tas Ghost Hunting Society technical specialist Brad Hull said.

``The spirits here are intelligent but they are not going to harm anyone, they're not going to push people down the stairs.

``So it isn't haunted in that respect but there are friends from long ago still here . . . and probably to them, this was their home.''

The team spent four hours at the house on Wednesday June 12, where they used full spectrum digital camera, EVP recorders, K2 meters, digital IR video recorders with IR illuminate-rs and an SP-7 spirit box.

``With the EVP recording sessions we ask questions and wait for responses,'' Mr Hull said.

``And we do have audio evidence, photo evidence and video evidence of things that we did capture.

``When it comes to paranormal investigating, the older the building and the more history it has, the more likely it is to be inhabited with paranormal activity.

``If there's been a tragic death at a property who's to say that individual can't move on, or that they feel trapped here.''

Franklin House was built by former convict and successful businessman Britton Jones in 1838.

In 1842, William Keeler Hawkes establish his boarding school Mr Hawkes' School at the house and it run until 1866.

The long reception room at the top of the stairs was used as the boys' dormitory and the room can still be entered today.

It was in this room Mr Orlando, Ms Campbell and Mr Wrigley had their personal experience.

Next door, in the old bedroom, was where the team captured a number of images with dark shadows in places they shouldn't be and most of its audio material.

The most significant were the names of both a female and a male.

The male voice was captured in an EVP recording - an electronic voice phenomenon recording capturing change in the electro fields that most humans cannot hear as it is in the white noise spectrum .

``We've listened to it over and over again and tried to rationalise what it was,'' Mr Hull said.

``What we believe it is, is a spirit connecting.

``The direct question was, what is your name, we think the response was Will.''

Franklin House co-ordinator Hilary Keeley wasn't too sure about the name at first, but the more she listened to it, the more she thought it could be.

She said the name Will had a connection with the house because of William Keeler Hawkes and a number of the boys who went to Mr Hawkes School were called Will.

``William Keeler Hawkes was buried in the old church yard over the road but maybe he had a conscience that didn't quite move on,'' she said.

She said two of the boys had died of scarlet fever at the school in 1843.

``One was on the 1st of October, the other was on the 15th, so there's always been a possibility that there could be paranormal activity,'' she said.

Another direct response Mrs Keeley heard was in the SP-7 Spirit Box session - which works similar to a radio - where the team asked ``if you are a female, what is your name?''

``The response was a quite definite Rachael,'' Mrs Keeley said.

``The only thing we can think of, because she wasn't someone who lived here, is she could have been a servant, or a maid, so we're looking into that.''

Mrs Keeley was also surprised by the response to the question: ``Are you happy here?''

``There was a definite no from a male's voice and at the same time a definite yes from a women's voice,'' she said.

One of the most paranormal spots in the house is the staircase.

It was on this staircase that the Tas Ghost Hunting Society captured video evidence of some light abnormalities on a full spectrum video recorder.

One abnormality looks like it is coming into the hallway and then heading back out.

Another heads up the stairs and then comes back down.

``We have had issues with the bottom of the stairs, so it's good to be able to know there is something there,'' Mrs Keeley said.

Volunteer house guide Pam Attwood said she had been upstairs once and heard a women call her name.

``I didn't feel anything creepy but it was a really clear call,'' she said.

``I lent over the banister and said ``yes'', but no one answered me.

``So I went downstairs and I said `who called me?', and no-one had.''

But with the evidence that the Tas Ghost Hunting Society have captured it is clear that someone could have called Mrs Attwood, just not a human.

``There is definitely something here,'' Mrs Keeley said.

Mrs Keeley said the evidence probably wouldn't be written into the Franklin House brochures and things yet.

``The thing about history is you have to have something conclusive,'' she said.

``We haven't got anything in concrete yet that we can use because we are very much about telling the facts.

``But if we find out say, that there was a Rachael here, we might be able to include something about that in our tours.''

The Tasmanian Ghost Hunting Society has completed a number of paranormal activity research studies.

They will return to Franklin House on July 3 when they will investigate the rest of the property, including the stables and school room.

Was haunting ghosts of boys who died of scarlet fever?

The has been numerous other research groups  which volunteered to find out what happened on the premises after dark reported many experiences of paranormal activities. objects moving by themselves, noises in empty rooms and shadow figures in empty wings. High levels of electromagnetic energy and whispers were reportedly recorded in an upstairs bedroom, when asked “what is your name”, the group recorded a disembodied voice replying “Will”.

Emily Ryan reported the following for the ABC on  7th of July 2013

A team of real-life ghost hunters in Tasmania has recorded what they believe could be evidence of paranormal activity in a National Trust home.

The group, known as the Tas Ghost Hunting Society, has been given access to Franklin House near Launceston.

There is a ghost story to be told in almost all of Tasmania's colonial buildings, but now members of the society are trawling through hours of recordings to sort fact from fiction.

Earlier this year, the Tas Ghost Hunting Society volunteered to find out what happens at Franklin House after dark.

"We're a non-profit organisation," member Brad Hull said. "We're out there to go and investigate, learn more about the paranormal, educate others about the paranormal and help anyone who's having problems with the paranormal, because not all spirits are friendly.

"A lot of people can be physically interacted with by the paranormal where they can be scratched or harmed, they can also hear screams and noises and shouts and objects can move."

During two visits to Franklin House the ghost hunters set up modified infrared cameras to monitor several rooms, including Mr Hawkes' classroom.

Once the house is plunged into darkness, they sat in front of a large screen and waited.

"It's not guaranteed that just because you're investigating, you're going to get evidence," Mr Hull said.

He is yet to see a ghost himself.

"Visually seeing an apparition? No. Would I like to? Yes, that'd be awesome."

In one corner of a sitting room at Franklin House, an investigator using an electromagnetic sensor detected higher than normal levels of energy.

The group usually experiences much more subtle activity.

"I've been around the whole house and this is the only part where the light turns orange," Ms Ingram said.

"It means there's activity here."

That was when the investigators started communicating with what they believed to be spirits.

In an upstairs bedroom they asked several times the question: "What is your name?"

"It came back with the answer, 'Will'," Mr Hull said.

The response was very faint, but Mr Hull added that is to be expected.

"An electronic voice phenomena is a sound that's in the white noise spectrum, which we can't audibly hear with our ears at the time, when we go back and review it's imprinted on the digital recorder."

Ms Ingram says it is unclear if the schoolmaster Mr Hawkes was known as Will or William.

"A number of the boys who were students here would've been Will as well," Ms Ingram said.

There are other mysteries, such as a beam of light that seems to travel up and down the main staircase before disappearing.

"We've also captured some light anomalies with still shots on door frames and things like that which shouldn't happen," Mr Hull said.

Investigator Simon Coleman understands there will be many sceptics.

"I guess that's what we aim to do is provide evidence that this stuff does exist," he said.

"It's not just a claim of faith we're trying to do here, it actually gives some substance to the fact that the paranormal is a present thing."

Mr Coleman does not think the house is haunted in a negative sense, but he is convinced there is something there.

"From the evidence I've seen so far it has a reasonable amount of activity," he said.

"This investigation will certainly help us to clarify that more and get a better understanding of what's going on here."

The team still needs to review hours of footage and audio recordings.

Even then, some things may never be explained.

As you can see from the above articles there was much interest in Franklin house. But are they inadvertently advertising their property was haunted?

Years ago on holiday I visited the house and felt nothing? Some times I think such houses like to have a suggestion that the house is haunted just to increase tourist numbers? That said my visit was during the day with other people visiting a lovely historic house.

Hi KANACKI, apologies but just catching up.

Without knowing the layout of Franklin House, the first thing I did was "Clear My Inner Self", then started to move (First Floor - first) from Left to Right, very slowly and felt a spirit starting from the Middle Window (assume this is the top of the stairs, with the Dining Room behind).

I started to get a stronger feeling moving to the final window on the Right-Hand Side. I dropped down to the Ground Floor, getting a stronger feeling in the Bottom Room below, on the Far Right-Hand Side.

I'm now outside of the "Home", moving from the Room on the Right-Hand Side looking in and stop at the Front Door, where I am "stuck" getting the strongest feeling of a Spirit.

Once I could move again, I felt nothing on the farthest Left-Hand Side.

The only thing I could not discern is whether there was one or two Spirits.

Hope the above helps my friend.

Hi KANACKI, just wanted to confirm that all my comments regarding the "Franklin House", were based on the photograph combined with "auto-writing", then I read what you had written about "Franklin House", so hopefully my comments make sense.

Hello Simon I think from memory it was 2004 I visited the house? I cannot remember exactly the layout. But what you described seems very accurate picture of building.

2 Spirits? Maybe two spirits of two young boys that died of fever?

Now a question to ponder over? If they died at the same time would they be aware of each other?

Hi KANACKI, death at the same time and place, yes, they would be aware of each other and may have been the reason neither Passed-Over.

They have each other to play with, etc., in a Spiritual World where time is meaning-less and the world around them has "not changed" from what they remembered.

Hello Simon

That is interesting. So for example another if another child died at few years later they would not be aware of each other than if they had died the same time together?

Morning KANACKI, this is the question most asked (when we had a lot of Member Activity LOL), the boy who died later and in the same home, would not be aware of the other two spirits.

This is my opinion only, but after my recent encounter, seeing the fluctuation of the external view of the "Spiritual World" energy I am 100% sure that the later spirit would definitely not see the previous Two Spirits.

Hello Simon

Interesting so they would inhabit their own sense of reality?

Yes KANACKI, timing of death and destination is individual and you will, hopefully, have read my last Post, which I am going to add more information regarding this subject; each Spirit only sees what they are allowed to see, based on the level of their Journey.

I am moving closer to the Spiritual Realm and view the many Physical Worlds, as if they are just "fog", a very "light fog".
