Cornucopia Hotel haunting Wallaroo: SA
« on: January 07, 2018, 02:00:11 AM »
Way down in south Australia on the York peninsular is an ancient pub with a rather sinister reputation of it being haunted..

The Cornucopia Hotel in the Upstairs section is said to have a male ghost.

This hotel was built in 1862 and Mr R. Hazelgrove was the first licensee, It has 52 rooms and is the
only hotel in Wallaroo which has retained its original name.

There are many claimed haunted locations on the York peninsular but none have the amount of reported
sightings as the Cornucopia hotel. This hotel has had its fair share of deaths on their premises and now is home to several alleged resident spirits!

There is an upstairs room the hotel staff don’t like to go in which may be the epicenter of the alleged haunting.

Was there any truth to such hauntings? was there any historical events that might identity this alleged ghost that haunts the classic old pub?

Or is all just urban legend?

Old Kanaki awake late at night, sick again unable to sleep investigates....

One lady by the name of Karen claims in her own words below.....

As previous manager of The Cornucopia Hotel (6 3/4 years), I can tell you I have no doubt that there is 1 or more ghosts who walk the rooms at the Cornucopia Hotel.

Nick named "Sam" he is often seen in the mirror on the landing of the second floor, in the dining room or in the hallway near the kitchen & laundry.

I saw him numerous times over the years.

Karen

A ghost named Sam?

I had to search deeper  into the history of the old building...

In the Kadina and Wallaroo Times (SA : 1888 - 1954), Wednesday 15 October 1913, page 2

States the following death at the Hotel that Mr William Crawford had died suddenly. The constable vent to the hotel and found Crawford dead in bed.

The deceased had been suffering with a wound in the leg, which had gave him considerable trouble and pain for about15 years.- On Saturday last he was not feeling in usual health and Dr Harbison was summoned and ordered him to bed.

During Saturday, and Sunday be was apparently better. On Monday morning Mrs Bryden, his sister,. visited his room to ascertain his condition, when he appeared 'worse. She .retired downstairs' to get him a cap of tea ' Whilst doing this the yardman informed her that he had visited Mr Crawford's room and was unable to awaken him, and he was of the opinion that he was dead.

Dr Harbisonand Wilson arrived soon after, and with M.C. Schumann made an examination of the body. The matter was reported to the coroner (Mr J. Malcolm, J.P.), who deemed an inquest unnecessary. Dr. Harbison and Wilson said deceased had a fatty heart, and gave a certificate that death was due to heart disease. The late Mr Crawford was 50 yeats of age, and -was single. He came from Clare some years ago to assist in the management of the hotel for his sister.

He was well liked, and his gentlemanly manner in the house made him many friends. The. funeral took place at Wallaroo on Saturday. Father Blake, of the Roman Catholic Church, conducted the burial service, and Mr W. Seeley was the undertaker. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs Bryden and family in their sudden bereavement.

Was William Crawford the ghost actually haunting the old pub?

I had to dig deeper into the history of the old pub?

Strange enough the old pub had a rather benign history with no records of suicides or murders at the hotel? Although as with many pubs across Australia inquests were held there to various deaths around the district, including those of murder and suicide. In fact looking back into history the pub was meeting place for many associations, councils and other civic receptions for many years.

While all pubs at one time may have had a fight or brawl. It was not a pub that had much violence. So in effect claims of many different ghosts falls rather flat in face of the historical evidence.

However the question remains does the former Publican William Crawford haunt the up stairs rooms? Perhaps keeping a watchful eye on pub patrons and staff as he did for many years before he died?

As always many questions so few answers....

One thing for sure. The Cornucopia Hotel was a focal meeting point for generations of residents of the area. Ghost or no ghost I sure if William Crawford is still around he would be proud that the hotel is still going strong.

Ah KANACKI, something "screamed out at me", the something was that, the former Publican of the Cornucopia Hotel, William Crawford, was murdered physically by the "Yardman", planned and paid for (to the Yardman) by Mr Crawford's sister, Mrs Bryden, for the most obvious of reasons, "Money".

It seemed, too me, too much of a coincidence that during the time, Mrs Bryden, went down for tea, as William was not feeling or looking very well (why was a doctor not called for, as I'm sure the doctor would have been better than a cup of tea) and during this time the Yardman went to Mr Crawford's room and found him dead.

Even stranger, Mr Crawford was feeling much better the previous two days.

Does, the Yardman visit Mr Crawford, in his room, if he was previously incapacitated?

Perhaps, this is the reason that the ghost, which had/has been sighted in the Cornucopia Hotel, named "Sam", could be Mr William Crawford, seeking justice for his murder.

I guess the first step would be to authenticate if a ghost does walk the upstairs rooms and mirror on the landing, then to identify if the ghost, is that of the previous Publican of the Cornucopia Hotel, William Crawford.

Hello Simon

Strange ass you say, The thought crossed my mind also? its possible of course? but was there a motive for yardman to commit murder?

Maybe Crawford was so obsessed in running the hotel he never felt the need to pass on?

And yes perhaps establishing the exact identity of this spirit would be the key to solving the mystery.

Hi KANACKI, strange indeed and it certainly would be more interesting to know the name of the spirit.

How is your health going KANACKI, hopefully on the mend?

Hello Simon

The drugs they are using to keep my lungs functioning has made mine spine brittle. I fractured a vertebra by coughing. Strange enough my eyes are getting better.

Hi KANACKI, I really am sorry that you get such an adverse reaction to the drugs to keep your lungs functioning.

It is sometimes very difficult to know in advance, when you are going to cough and even if you did I suspect that tensing your body may also have a similar experience on your vertebrae.

Have you asked your specialist is there a "Corset Like" medical product to prevent, or at least reduce the impact on your vertebrae, when you cough? Worth a phone call at least, or on your next visit.

I am glad your eyes are getting better though.

Gidday Simon I wish my eyes was getting better? As of late my eyes have been giving me grief. So if I misspell some thing or mistype or used the wrong word. My apologies in advance.

Regardless I would be interested anyone who has experiences in the old hotel?
