Phantom of the Rose and Crown Guilford WA

Old hotels are always the creepy? Apparently spirits of convicts and former publicans roam the corridors of the Rose & Crown in Guildford. It’s also said there’s a remorseful ghost called Charlie who in his former life as a human caught his wife cheating and murdered her in the hotel.
Is there any truth to the ghostly yarns of the old pub? Or just an urban myth as it seems every old pub have their ghosts but is there any truth to the stories of spooks who haunt this ancient alcohol watering hole.
To be continued.....

looking through old newspapers I can find not historical reference to such a murder. Some times pubs are struggling these days especially older historical country pubs and there seems a need to add color to such pubs by having their resident ghost....
Even if he or she never existed.....

But strange enough stories persist that the pub is haunted. One such visitor claimed he was talking to an old fella down in downstairs cellar bar chatting away and he looked away drinking his beer for second and went to say some thing back to him, discovering with shock he was gone vanished.....
Yet it appears there was only one exit and he was insight of the exit at all times and never say anyone leave? He was so stunned he asked couple sharing drinks together nearby They looked blankly and said he was by there by himself. And it was his first beer!
You can see pictures of the Down stairs bar below, Those guests who cannot then I suggest signing up to this wonderful forum. You will get to see some amazing pictures of places and people connected to haunted locations through out Australia.

KANACKI, another interesting mystery with a well in the downstairs of the old building.
I think we have had, at least, two other Posts that you have written, involving pubs with wells downstairs KANACKI; all built by convicts and each having possibly one or more spirits haunting the pubs.
In this case, only two people have seen the spirits, with a patron actually talking to a spirit; is the customer a Paranormal, as no one else around him saw the old man he was talking too.
What were their thoughts given a sole customer, apparently talking by himself.
Also, a female customer also say a male person with, what looked like very old "convict" clothing.
Were the two sightings of the same spirit, who may have died building the downstairs section of the pub?
Worth more investigation KANACKI.

Hello Simon
I researched a little but found nothing in early newspapers to really show a death murder or suicide occurred there. It may be case of Pub just wanting to have a resident ghost. But its possible once again a case of stone tape recordings?

KANACKI, I agree and am really interested with the concept of "stone tape recordings" and perhaps with the spirits of Convicts, which may be able to "merge" with the right person, would only appear to a few customers of the Pub(s).
During the time when Convicts, "Guards" (Soldiers) and Bureaucrats’ and initially the emergence of "Free-Citizens", written news, would be very limited, especially written news regarding the death(s) of Convicts; this would not be considered "news-worthy".

KANACKI, you and I come to the same point in relation of a time, where most "fit" (decided by those in power I would think) convicts were used in the building of housing, roads, prisons (very close to convict’s "hearts" LOL), etc.
I think that during this period in a country developed, for a current few "free-people", however the convicts would also be building to accommodate the growing number of free-people coming to Australia on the basis of promised farming land, shops with accommodation upstairs, the proliferation of pubs being built with wells designed to hold fresh water, etc.
So, I think a number of deaths amongst convicts (builders, servants), who may have been worked until they died.
In each category, convicts who died, whilst in servitude to the soldiers, bureaucrats and in time the "Landed Gentry", would have been disposed of in the manner most suited to the environment they worked in, without much of a record being kept; convicts, who died whist building stores, pubs, etc., buried at the bottom of a well, then stones would be built above the body, to ensure the water was not negatively affected or under the stone foundations - the most appropriate manner.
In relation to working on farms, buried underneath the lands on top of vegetables, fruit, farms.
So, spirits may, in fact, be found where they passed or were murdered (including deaths due to very low care these prisoners received).
The instance of this occurring on a regular basis decreased, with the reduction in the number of convicts being shipped to Australia as prisoners, to be changed with more "free people", coming due to incentives provided in the UK to start populating Australia thus further strengthening the spread of the UK's influence/expansion in the world.
Hope the above makes sense!!

Hello Simon.
Indeed it does make sense. The dead may of not been reported if it was not a murder or suicide, The convict could of died of natural causes and as you have said many times failed for one reason or another to pass on?
Or perhaps he liked too much a the beer at this pub :-)
Maybe they feel comfortable in their present state rather than passing on?

Yes, quite correct KANACKI, as I have come across spirits who are quite happy to not move on, but this cannot be allowed to continue for a long period of time as each spirit would fail to continue their journey in both the spiritual and physical worlds.
Sorry KANACKI for the interruption but interestingly, I have some spirits who are around me at this moment; they are either my Spirit Guides of Friends from the other side as I cannot detect them in the normal way, just seeing the "dents" in the area around me.
