Clunes 'puma' on the prowl
20 Jul, 2010 01:03 PM
A BIG cat resembling a puma was claimed to have been spotted off Fairview Rd in Clunes last week.
Resident Wayne Glennie said his partner had gone for her morning walk when she saw a large cat in the bushes around 9am on Wednesday.
"It had a a distinct tail of a Cougar or Puma-type cat, it was a sandy colour with the tail quite recogniseable," Mr Glennie said.
"After she had a good look at it, it made itself very scarce and sneaked off into the bush."
A fortnight ago, Mr Glennie said he saw large footprints in the same area but initially thought they belonged to a hunting dog.
"Now we seem to be putting the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle," he said.
Council said they had no history of similar reports in the region.
"It's not an everyday occurrence but evidence suggests that they are out there for sure," Mr Glennie said.
Personally I think the footprint in the pic looks more like a dogprint..with the claw marks, cats have retracted claws..but I am not very educated in such things...

Cool. So close to us as well.
-
yeah just up the road...or along the creek...
-
we should go out at dusk with one of your sheep Janine...stake it out and with the video, LOL> Or if you prefer we could substitute the sheep for a kid.
-
oh take all the kids today..please....they have cat bait written all over them
-
Uh - Oh.....
Headlines: "Two crazy women use kids to bait puma in Clunes while making video from behind bushes"
-
would give the locals something to gossip about for a week or 2..lol
-
LOL, you are forgetting one inportant fact; cats are smart, so the puma will bypass the kids and head for the two lovely ladies behind the bushes.
-
yes alien, cats are smart, that's why I will be carrying a spray bottle containing watered down bleach lol
-
ROFL. This would make a good reality TV show.
-
I'm game! ROFL!
-
I'd be a hoot. But I don't think people would believe it, even if they saw it on video....... because they don't want to. The cry would go up 'Oh its just a person in a puma suit'. (I'd be a bit too round for a puma suit, so we can rule that out!)
If they're waiting for some instant proof, like a puma ripping someone's head off, they'd better not hold their breath. I think these cats are more timid than anything and I don't think for a minute that one would intentionally put itself in the spotlight (or headlights, as it were) unless it was starving - which I doubt, or possibly totally engrossed in a chase - pursuing its dinner.
-
They have proof now Salty, its just not for public consumption! LOL
-
Certain big cat types will be more aggressive (eg Lions, Tigers) than other types (Pumas, Ocelots Cheetahs). Since the Pumas fall into the latter, and as Satly stated, they are timid and most likely to be secretive.
One thing is for sure; they will never go hungry in the Australian bush.
-
No your right Alien, plenty of Bushwalkers!! ROTFPMSL!
-
New Reality TV Show: 'How far does a bushwalker get on the walking trail before disappearing in a frenzy of big cat paw prints?'
(No need for an 'elimination round' in this game - not enough contestants left at the end of each day anyway. Lol.)
-
LOL Salty, there is a trail in NZ where something like 28 bushwalkers/campers have disappeared. Serial killers have been ruled out. Sometimes they find scattered bones. On my bucket list....walk that trail. ROFL
-
Really..... which part? I hadn't heard of it.
Some places in the wilderness in the south island are a bit odd. I remember feelinig sure there were eyes on me, out in the valley near Mt. Cool. I was sitting on a rock, listening to the wind howling in a canyon - no other human in sight for miles.
Then a guy appeared out of nowhere, laying baits. Not sure what for. I didn't strike up a conversation because I was sitting alone in the wilderness waiting for 4 other family members to come back down from a mountain walk up a trail they'd taken in the area behind me.
28 bushwalkers/campers isn't a bad tally, hey?
-
er..... that would be Mt. Cook. Not Mt. Cool. Lol
-
I will go find the name for you Salty
-
Cool.
-
Here we go Salty.....South Island, Heaphy Track. 82 km long track.
I can't find the part with the number of people missing there, so I will have to say disregard the number. The area is now part of the Kahurangi National Park. The area was used by Maori and gold miners back in the day.
Its so annoying when you think you read something and then can't find it. I can't find the mention of 28 anythings in this bloody book, but I swear it was there when I read it last week LOL. Maybe I dreamed it! Bugga!
-
LMAO CE you have got my reading disease; it is called cross memory syndrome, where you recall facts from past reading/research and link it to a different source to where it actually was lol.
-
maybe that is what it is. ROFL. Frustrating!
-
Thanks CE. I must have a look see where we went to. I remember the main towns but not the byways we took.
-
Check out the photos of Heaphy Track on this link below.
There are sooooo many places where a person could disappear.
It's an extremely long track.

What do you think the boot tree is about? Why walk all that way and abandon your boots?
-
Maybe the boot tree entertains the Kea birds and keeps them away from tearing up tents and other belongings. Just a thought.
You often find them hanging out near the snow line, and they can wreck the fittings on a car in a matter of minutes with their beaks. The go for car mirrors, luggage racks, tyres, bumpers, wipers, badges, and a favourite is to turn spare tyre covers on 4WD's into ribbons.
I imagine they'd turn a tent into confetti with lightning speed. f you were camping and happened to wander off down to the creek for a few minutes, you could return to find a total disaster. It's just something they seem to like doing - wrecking inedible things! So.... boots?....probably.
I know! The boot tree is a totem to the Kea's offering thanks for not chewing up other things the hikers own. LOL :)
