You may have had a panic attack caused by the phenomenon you experienced!

Lol! I probably would have!

ad you know best what sort of experience it was.

Hi Violet,
Thanks for that. I guess it is hard to explain and people need to keep an open mind with these kinds of things.
As I said the only thing that freaked me out was hearing someone close the cubicle door beside me and no
one came out.

Just wanted to revisit this thread... I'm searching through the NLA newspapers for family related research and in doing so came across an article that reminded me of this thread. It's a news item that fits with, and also pre-dates Lotsa's news article quoted below, by just 8 months, and I thought you all might be interested in the 'ghostly' overtones.

just found this....not necessarily related, but fires in hotels did happen..

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT
BAIRNSDALE. The Argus sat 25th April 1891

A HOTEL AND THREE SHOPS BURNED
DOWN.
BAIRNSDALE, FRIDAY.
The Commercial Hotel and the three adjoin- ing premises in Main-street, Bairnsdale, were completely destroyed by fire early this morn- ing. The hotel and furniture and stock were insured in several offices to the extent of £2,300, the two adjoining shops for £100, and the third was uninsured. The origin of the fire is wrapped in mystery. The hotel has had more than one narrow escape previously. It was a very old wooden building.

The snippet I just found is:

THE GIPPSLAND TIMES
Monday 4th August 1890

The Commercial Hotel, Main Street, Bairnsdale had a narrow escape of being burnt down on Saturday morning. The manner in which is was discovered in time is peculiar. It had been rumoured (says a "Herald" telegram) that a "ghost" was prowling about the premises lately, and a party was sitting up to "lay" the ghost when they discovered the flames, but not before the ceilings of the parlour and dining rooms were much burnt. The damage done is estimated at £50.

Looks like this place was destined to burn down, and I guess this is one of the narrow escapes referred to in Lotsa's article.

I wonder what was built there after it burn't down.

Hi Lotsakids,
Thanks very much for digging up the info, I would also like to find out from Deka where I can read about the stories
related to the hauntings in the Grand Terminus hotel. It's impossible to find anything on the internet.

I don't really know where you would or could read about things that have happened at the Grand Terminus. I've just heard snippets here and there from people who had worked there. From what I was told it was the usual sort of unexplained noises, things getting moved, etc. Sorry ad65, that's probably not much help. Just was told that it's apparently quite haunted.

Have done a little more digging in the newspapers of the time, just for interests sake. The Commercial Hotel which burnt down in 1891 was an old wooden building and was situated in Main Street, Bairnsdale, and the 3 adjoining buildings which were destroyed with it were in Bailey Street. So that puts the burnt Commercial Hotel on the corner of Main & Bailey.

The current 2 storey Commercial Hotel in Bairnsdale also stands in this exact same spot, so it was clearly rebuilt.

There's a mention in around 1905 of a "madman at large" in the hotel so one could assume it was rebuilt fairly quickly. The current hotel used to have a verandah, as reference is made to the madman going through a window out onto the balcony, but the verandah doesn't exist anymore.

I'm wondering now ad65 if you may have been at the Commercial.. this also fits with the opening a door and no balcony being there. What do you think?

It is fantastic information. What a superb find!!!
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.
