Freemantle Prison
A tour of the Fremantle Prison is a fantastic and fascinating day out whether you are a local, interstate or international visitor. Far more than just one of Western Australia's premier heritage sites, the Fremantle Prison is a piece of living history.
Situated in the heart of bustling Fremantle, the Prison is a lasting monument to the city that was. Step inside and be transported back in time to experience both the good and bad of our history. See the tiny cells in which people lived day after day, the stunning art painted straight on the walls and the inspiring convict-made architecture.
If only the walls could talk! However, the guided tour offers the next best thing — the amazing stories that each and every tour guide has to offer. No two tours are the same, as this ancient buildings history holds many secrets and stories ready to be shared and each guide has their own interests, perspectives and experiences.
The Prison offers a range of tours, each one unique and exciting in its own way, so take a look and choose which one suits you.

HA!  I'll be the walls really do talk, just depends on whether or not you're listening.

Perhaps we could arrange an interstate tour group sometime?  Have to be organised well in advance so people could come up with the funds but I wouldn't mind doing either of these tours.  They sound interesting.  Has anyone here been on either of them?

That is a fanastic idea Flutterbit.

I have done the tour of the goal itself but not the ghost tour. Air fares are pretty cheap now too.

I agree its a great idea !!!

I think western australia would be a fasinating place to go for some investigations, I would love to go to the Fremantle Arts Centre, apparently the most haunted place in the southern hemisphere.....

FREMANTLE ARTS CENTRE AND HISTORY MUSEUM
Fremantle, WA

BUILT: 1867.

HISTORY: The Fremantle Arts Centre and History Museum is said to be the most haunted place in the Southern Hemisphere.

Originally Western Australia's first lunatic asylum, it was completed in 1867 using convict labour.

In 1900, after two deaths and a Government inquiry, the asylum was condemned - though its patients weren't relocated until 1909!

It was used as a nursing home, US army headquarters and a technical college before a museum opened on the site in 1970, and the Arts Centre in 1972.

THE GHOSTS: Alex Marshall, who runs Fremantle Ghost Tours, says the old gothic-style building is haunted by at least 10 restless spirits.

One is an elderly lady believed to have been a mental patient in the asylum.

Myth has it that, after her daughter was abducted, she jumped from the first-floor window of what is now the Investigator Gallery.

Many believe she still roams the building searching for her daughter.

"In the room where she jumped from the window," says Alex, "people often say they've seen or felt her around them.

"One tour, I took three couples there. One woman said to me, 'Can you hear that child singing?' I said no, and another woman said, 'Yes, it's very faint.'

Before long, the third woman could hear it. Then as we left, one of the men whispered 'You know, I could hear the singing too!'"

Alex once saw a man, in black from top to toe, walk across the courtyard while he was addressing a tour group. "I thought, 'Oh my gosh, it's true! I've seen one.'

Especially when he suddenly vanished!"

But the scariest encounter Alex has had in six years of taking tour groups through the building happened just a month ago.

"I took a group to the Painting Studio, where a lot of activity occurs." he explains.

"All of a sudden, one of the men started shaking. I thought, 'He's putting it on,' but when I turned on the lights I realised he wasn't joking.

"His arms were straight in front of him, and he was shaking.

"Sweat was pouring off his body and he was staring into space. Everyone in the group got a fright and moved away.

When he stopped shaking, he just said, 'She's gone now.' That was pretty scary!"

During another tour four years ago, Alex was called away by a man who said a woman upstairs wouldn't move.

Alex followed him inside, thinking, "Oh yeah, here we go."

But at the top of the staircase, he saw the woman standing at the top, her body completely rigid. She had a fixed stare, but looked petrified.

"Are you all right?" Alex asked, his heart pounding. The woman looked at him, nodded - and fainted. After she came to, she fled the building!

Emma Phillips, the public relations manager at the Arts Centre, says that footsteps are often heard when no visitors are around and inexplicable "cold spots" occur in some rooms.

She explains that it's known as the most haunted place in the Southern Hemisphere "mainly because of the amount of sightings people have had here".

"It's definitely haunted," Alex agrees.

Hey all,
I have toured the Freo Prison many times on both public and private night tours. The torchlight tour is quite good, however it is a little short in duration, and due to the fact it is open to the general public - there are many places within the prison these tours are not allowed to venture.
Anthony Grzelka (whispersfrombeyond.com.au) has held quite a few private tours and investigations at the prison, which are awesome. We had access to the womens section (arguably the most haunted area in the prison), the tunnels, and the metals and fabricatrions workshop where a lot of activity was detected. Our small group spent some alone time in solitary confinement as well as the gallows also which was quite interesting. Managed to get quite a few shots with some nice self illuminating orb's on some of these tours also..
Anthony has communicated on different occasions with several resident energies, including the Area 43 resident energy, who hates women and absolutley anything do do with police.. He is a particularly nasty entity, and various women while walking through Area 43 have felt as if they are being strangled or choked by an invisible force. According to Anthony, this spirit was originally jailed for torturing a dog..
Also, notorious serial killer David Birnie's energy is often present outside his isolated cells in one of the main cell blocks. He seems to enjoy being talked about and has a particularly negative and sinister personality.

There are emany other resident and visiting energies around the Prison, it is indeed very haunted. The prison itself (as one would expect) is generally a negative atmosphere - the lingering energies also behave in that manor, possibly due to their harsh time served here.

It is a very intersting place, I am fascinated if not obsessed with it's history. Definatley a location worthy of a full and proper paranormal investigation.

Have done the Torchlight Tour several times. It is really good fun. They do try to scare you several times, people jumping out and such.Absolutely no scope for anything serious. You spend a limited time at each spot, usually with another tour group hot on your heels. The attitudes of the guides varies greatly. It is an informative and interesting evening which doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's about 1 1/2 hours, best to book, some of the tours can get fully booked early. They do 10 each Wed/Fri night.
We've had quite a selection of activity there.Go if you can,you won't be disappointed.
